And the Winner of the German Book Prize 2018 is... Archipel by Inger-Maria Mahlke!

October 11, 2018

Because I’m at the book fair in Frankfurt and haven’t yet had time to finish reading the book in question (review forthcoming), you’ll have to be satisfied with a short notice. For the first time in five years the winner of the German Book Prize is a woman! Inger-Maria Mahlke, who was already on the short list in 2015 with Wie Ihr Wollt, accepted the award for Archipel the best German-language novel of the year in a ceremony on Monday in Frankfurt. She receives €25,000 for her efforts, and Mahlke didn’t have a prepared speech, but she did have the wherewithal to thank Barbara Laugwitz, who was recently dismissed from her position as Publisher at Rowohlt Verlag.

Here to Mahlke—congrats!
